Discover the Trail in Norwalk
The Norwalk River Valley Trail (NRVT) is transforming how Norwalk, CT residents and visitors enjoy the outdoors. As the city’s premier multi-use greenway, the Norwalk segment of the NRVT is not only a picturesque route for walkers, runners, and cyclists, but also a vital community connector, supporting recreation, wellbeing, and local pride. Thanks to the dedication of partners, city officials, and volunteers, our trail continues to grow, opening up new sections and opportunities with each season.
The NRVT is nearing completion, with strong community support, recent funding, and an active schedule of studies and volunteer opportunities aimed at making this a vital regional asset in southwestern Connecticut.

Latest Trail Updates & Construction Progress
Exciting developments are underway for the Norwalk River Valley Trail with significant progress and new funding accelerating the completion of this 30-mile multi-use trail that will soon connect Norwalk to Danbury through Wilton, Redding, Ridgefield, and other communities. The trail, with already nearly 13 miles of completed segments, is moving closer to becoming the longest recreational trail in Fairfield County.
Major Funding Boost for Completion
In June 2025, the NRVT received a substantial $1.5 million state grant dedicated to completing the northernmost section of Norwalk’s portion of the trail. This funding will help close critical gaps and ensure the trail is fully paved, accessible, and ready for use by pedestrians, cyclists, seniors, and families. The trail’s design features a 10-foot-wide pathway incorporating both paved and stone-dust surfaces, carefully engineered to be fully handicap accessible, providing an inclusive space for outdoor recreation and transportation.
Regional Trail Study and Gap Closure
Beginning in June 2025 and running through August 2027, a comprehensive regional trail study is underway to address five critical gaps along the NRVT and adjacent trail connections. This study aims to produce shovel-ready construction documents to accelerate trail building and ensure seamless connectivity. The study is a collaborative effort involving WestCOG, Friends of the NRVT, and partner municipalities to expand the trail network, linking urban centers to natural areas, schools, parks, and community hubs across Fairfield County.
Community Involvement and Volunteer Opportunities
We are thrilled to share that the Norwalk River Valley Trail was recently featured on the "Community Ties" podcast by Nancy on Norwalk. In the episode, host Jack Pavia spoke with NRVT’s Andrea Gartner (Executive Director) and Emily Burnaman (Board Member, Chair of Norwalk Bike/Walk Commission) about the trail’s mission, its impact on the community, recent developments, and the many ways residents can get involved. This engaging conversation highlights how the NRVT is connecting Norwalk and bringing people together through accessible outdoor spaces. Listen to the episode to hear our story and learn more about our vision for the future of the trail.
The NRVT thrives because of robust community and organizational partnerships. The generous support from the City of Norwalk, Fairfield County's Community Foundation, Norwalk Land Trust, REI Norwalk, and local businesses has fueled recent improvements and funded amenities like new trailhead kiosks, NRVT signage, benches, bike racks, and pollinator-friendly landscaping.
Volunteer days hosted by groups like the Volunteers of Keep Norwalk Beautiful and the Norwalk River Watershed Association (NRWA) have helped clear brush, install birdhouses, and keep the trail beautiful and safe for everyone. Special thanks go to all who invested time, resources, and energy. Your contributions are the backbone of trail progress. Interested in becoming a partner or making a corporate donation?
