Big changes are on the horizon for the Norwalk River Valley Trail (NRVT) in Danbury! With recent funding and strong partnerships, the vision of a continuous multi-use trail across Fairfield County is moving closer to reality, bringing numerous benefits to the community and outdoor enthusiasts.

Construction Progress & Trail Route

The Danbury section of the NRVT is set to become an exciting new gateway to the outdoors, as it will traverse the scenic 722-acre Tarrywile Park, one of the city’s premier open spaces. Thanks to financial backing from the City of Danbury and the Connecticut Department of Transportation, the design phase is now underway, clearing the path for construction to begin in early 2026.

The new trail segment in Danbury will feature a mix of stone dust and boardwalk surfaces, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience for walkers, hikers, and cyclists of all abilities. Accessibility remains a top priority, with pet-friendly policies (on-leash) and no required fees to encourage broad community use.

Regional Significance and Support

The development of the NRVT is bolstered by a recent $1.5 million state grant as part of Connecticut’s Community Investment Fund program. This funding supports not just Danbury but the continued linking of NRVT across Norwalk, Wilton, Redding, Ridgefield, and ultimately to Danbury’s Rogers Park. When completed, the NRVT will extend 30 miles and rank as Fairfield County's longest recreational trail.

This expansion isn't happening in isolation: the NRVT is part of a broader regional trail network, connecting Western Connecticut’s towns and key greenways, with studies and planning continuing through August 2027. The vision is to close critical gaps and create accessible routes for all, from city centers to serene parks.

What’s Next for Danbury

  • Trail Construction: Scheduled to start in early 2026, focusing first on the Tarrywile Park segment.

  • Community Impact: The new trail will offer walking, cycling, and hiking opportunities while linking Danbury more directly to the regional trail network and boosting local access to nature and healthy recreation.

  • Local Engagement: Residents are encouraged to stay tuned for updates, participate in public meetings, and volunteer for trail stewardship as this transformational project moves forward.
